Strategy & Development Operations
This team is driving transformation within Global Operations, from innovation and digitalisation projects through to continuous process improvement. Every day, the team works with colleagues across our company to make sure Global Operations keeps pace with the trends that are transforming our industry. These colleagues grab innovative new ideas when they spring up, and then introduce them into our organisation worldwide. They are involved at every stage in the value chain and across every site around the world.
Quality Assurance
The quality of our products is one of our most valuable assets – and the cornerstone of our success. Our Quality Assurance team ensures quality along the entire value chain by working closely with internal and external partners. They prevent quality issues before they occur by applying a proactive approach to identifying and controlling potential problems. In this way, our Quality Assurance team makes certain that we continue to provide patients with safe and reliable medicines that improve their quality of life.
“I’m originally from Brazil, a very culturally mixed country. At Grünenthal, I have the opportunity to work and connect with people from around the world. This environment inspires me to keep growing towards achieving my personal and professional goals.”

Procurement
Our Global Procurement team is responsible for sourcing our global supply of materials, services and technologies. Based on strong collaboration with our partners and suppliers, the colleagues in Procurement generate the maximum possible value for Grünenthal while ensuring compliance across our operations worldwide.
Manufacturing
Operational Excellence is at the heart of this team’s work. Their daily tasks include challenging the status quo and identifying ways to improve our manufacturing processes. They drive performance and excellence across our five specialised sites in Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Ecuador and Chile, where we make our Grünenthal products – while also operating our full-service Contract Manufacturing Business that covers everything from active substances through to finished products. The team has substantial experience of developing packaging designs for temperature-sensitive products. And they make sure we always comply with relevant requirements for GxP, drug safety, serialisation, environment, health and safety.
Supply Chain
This team makes sure our products reach our customers at the right time – across more than 100 countries worldwide. They know how to bring products to market at a competitive price, and take an end-to-end approach to ensure patients receive the products they need on time and in full. Grünenthal’s transportation and warehousing operations have to meet strict regulatory and quality requirements related to storing and shipping controlled substances. On top of this, the biopharmaceutical products within the portfolio of our Contract Manufacturing Business need to be shipped
“Grünenthal strongly believes that every individual counts – and that we can all make a meaningful impact. I’ve been given the chance to learn and develop in different roles, and have been supported with training opportunities, global exposure and mentoring that fits my specific career aspirations. I started my career in the manufacturing environment as a Good Manufacturing Practice documentation specialist, and have developed step-by-step to become our Head of Supply Chain for Italy.”

Contract Manufacturing Business
This team has a laser-sharp focus on the continuous improvement of our quality, costs and service levels. Their work empowers our company to meet our existing customers’ expectations – and to attract new customers for our Contract Manufacturing Business (CMB). By making products for external customers, they maximise the productivity of our five manufacturing facilities. Around 50 percent of the products we make in our factories go to third parties.
Manufacturing Science & Integration
This dedicated team brings together technical experts and project management professionals who specialise in product transfers and integrations, as well as continuous product improvement and re-engineering. They work closely with colleagues from all areas of our Global Operations team, and also join forces with our R&D and Commercial organisations to understand future requirements, develop solutions and ensure proper implementation of new products by applying an end-to-end approach.
“Our Global Operations team has a powerful spirit of collaboration and joins forces to make an even bigger impact together. It plays a key role in driving Grünenthal toward its ambitious plans – and making sure patients around the world can rely on our life-changing medicines.”

Industry 4.0 and the digital revolution
Digital technologies are opening up once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for our Global Operations team. That’s why we’re implementing smart innovations inspired by Industry 4.0 to maximise productivity and support our focus on continuous improvement. From automation through to unleashing the power of data, we’re determined to explore every possible way of creating value through digital solutions.
For example, we’re already running pilot projects in areas including data capture, advanced analytics and assembly line robotics – among many others.
Expanding our Contract Manufacturing Business
Grünenthal operates five production sites in Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Ecuador and Chile. These sites manufacture our products – and they also support external customers, who account for around 50 percent of our overall production capacity. Our Contract Manufacturing Business is served by sites that are fully integrated, from API production through to finished products. They provide a strong service portfolio including controlled drugs handling, regulatory services, production process design, export to 100 countries worldwide and
Investing in world-class operations for Latin America
Grünenthal is going to invest more than 100 million euros in our operations in Latin America. This will ensure world-class infrastructure and process technologies at our production site in Santiago, Chile. And it will also reinforce our site in Quito, Ecuador, as a regional manufacturing and distribution centre for liquids and semi-solids.
We aim to secure Grünenthal’s long-term strength in Latin America by improving our manufacturing operations and maximising our Contract
Protecting patients against falsified medicines
In February 2019, we began operating in line with a new piece of European Union (EU) legislation called the Falsified Medicines Directive (FMD). It aims to prevent counterfeit medicines from being dispensed by pharmacies. The changes are widely viewed as one of the largest transformations in the history of our industry. Grünenthal was one of the first 20 companies to connect to the European system for FMD – which shows the strength of our dedication to ensuring patients’ safety.
All packaging sites are equipped with serialization and
aggregation infrastructure to match the various national
requirements.
