Our hybrid working model

Grünenthal employees may choose to work in a hybrid model, combining on-site work with working from home. We call it SmartWork. The concept gives employees the benefits of a fixed workplace, such as connecting with colleagues, collaborating to explore new ideas, and social exchange. At the same time, employees also get the advantages of remote working, including a better work-life balance and less travel time. We have all the digital tools for information sharing and collaboration in place. Our global guideline gives many employees the option to work at locations outside of our company’s

 premises up to three days per week, in close alignment with their manager. The implementation of the model depends on local regulations.

Grünenthal has a long tradition of supporting projects that have a positive impact on people and communities, from palliative care and charity activities through to environmental protection. Caring for the world around us is a key part of our culture. That’s why we embrace opportunities to engage in initiatives that increase quality of life for people around the globe. In 2020, for example, our team in Ecuador donated school backpacks and winter kits to children

aged 5 to 16. The winter kits included a waterproof poncho, rubber boots and an umbrella to help the children make the hour-long journey to school during the difficult winter months.

In the same year, our team in Spain conducted a special fundraising activity to make young patients a little more comfortable during hospital stays. Our team organised a quiz where employees competed against each other to win points – and these points were then transformed into donations to two hospitals.

For many years, the Grünenthal Foundation for Thalidomide-affected People has been running support projects for people affected by a Thalidomide-containing product from Grünenthal or its licensees. The foundation aims to permanently improve their lives in a pragmatic way by providing specific, needs-based support. Since it was established, the foundation has provided support for more than 2,000 individual cases – ranging from barrier-free bathrooms and kitchens through to specially adapted wheelchairs and cars, voice-controlled software for the remote use of computers and other devices, as well as investments in adapted hospital rooms.

On top of our various activities to support social progress around the world, we also place a strong focus on driving progress towards environmental protection. Alongside concrete goals that anchor sustainability into our operations, we are constantly seeking new opportunities to reduce our environmental footprint. In February 2020, for example, we committed to including electric and hybrid engines among our fleet of company cars in Aachen, Germany.

Grünenthal employees around the world have stepped up their strong support for healthcare systems, communities and individuals during the Covid-19 outbreak. Our teams have donated tens of thousands of protective masks, as well as disinfectant gel, digital thermometers and pulse oximeters. We’ve donated money to hospitals, charities and social initiatives around the world, while also donating time and medical expertise by actively participating in a wide range of projects related to managing the global pandemic.
