In Research & Development, we’re continuously exploring innovative new treatment options to make a stronger, more positive impact on the lives of the patients we serve. You’ll work with talented colleagues in a state-of-the-art Research & Development environment, developing innovative medicines that change the life of patients for the better and help us make progress towards our vision of a world free of pain. Join us today, and discover the difference you can make.

What the job looks like
Each day you'll enjoy a variety of challenges by applying your AI/DL/ML knowledge to:

  • Within the Bioinformatics team you will drive the development and implementation of innovative computational methods and techniques to progress Grünenthal’s diverse R&D interests that range from small molecules to Genetic Medicine (GenMed)
  • Develop analytic platforms that integrate multi-modal omics and patient-level datasets to build a deep understanding of disease biology for insights into disease pathways, novel targets and biomarkers
  • Lead a range of bioinformatic initiatives that will shape our GenMed strategy by building the data infrastructure and in silico pipelines for application across projects; for e.g.
    - developing computational approaches to model sequence and backbone–chemistry–activity relationships, to guide chemists in designing improved oligonucleotide prototypes with enhanced activity, delivery, and safety
    - leveraging approaches such as SHAPE-guided RNA structure mapping, long-read sequencing, spatial biology, and lncRNA profiling to enable cell-type selective modulation and deepen delivery insights
  • Champion and deploy emerging AI/ML techniques such as foundational models for single cell & spatial omics to advance molecular and cellular understanding of disease mechanisms
  • Ensure findings from these in silico activities are appropriately incorporated into project strategies, including translational and early clinical development plans

In addition, you will have opportunities to communicate key findings to relevant stakeholders and integrate computational science with the cutting-edge science conducted within our R&D organization.

What you'll bring to the table
To thrive in this role, you should bring a blend of computational expertise and drug development insights, including:

  • PhD (or equivalent experience) in computational biology, bioinformatics, artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML)/deep learning (DL)
  • Proven track record of leadership in bioinformatics with the ability to define roadmaps, integrate diverse & multimodal data sets (omics, biomarkers, patient phenotypes)), execute & implement advanced analytical approaches and guide teams and CROs to build robust pipelines and data infrastructure
  • Demonstratable experience in at least one of these areas:
    - Expertise in RNA biology and oligonucleotide design (ASOs, siRNAs, or related modalities), with a strong grasp of sequence optimisation, activity prediction, and off-target analysis
    - Application of advanced computational and omics approaches such as RNA-seq, long-read sequencing, RNA structural mapping (e.g. SHAPE), spatial transcriptomics, or lncRNA profiling to inform discovery or translational programs.
  • Expert-level programming ability in R and/or Python
  • Broad experience in applying frameworks such as Tensorflow, Keras, Pytorch to evaluate ML models
  • Broad experience in designing, creating, and querying biomedical databases
  • Prior experience in using high performance computing environments and cloud technology
  • Demonstratable ability to work in a complex matrix environment and successfully lead projects
  • Fluent business English language skills in speaking and writing, German language skills beneficial
  • Broad international & intercultural work experience

What are some of the local benefits
•    Hybrid working model
