What the job looks like

Each day you'll enjoy a variety of challenges, such as:

  • Identifying and validating novel targets relevant to our mission, co-develop corresponding human disease-relevant test systems (e.g. human primary tissues and cell-lines) and models in order  to support/accelerate the start of preclinical projects, the identification of clinical candidates, and to understand/address the underlying cause of painful conditions
  • Broaden, enhance and support Grünenthal’s capabilities in identifying, assess and prioritize/triage novel targets according to our mission
  • Be in charge of profound  target validation to understand the causality of a target for pain
  • Be in charge of leading and working in a project team with members from different disciplines to support the start of a project and the identification of clinical candidates
  • Be responsible for developing and establishing workflows to source and identify novel molecular targets for the indication pain
  • Responsible for optimizing  a process for and conduction of pain target assessments, including support by CROs and functional experts from different internal disciplines
  • Be responsible for developing and maintaining expertise in state-of-the-art molecular biology tools
  • Design expression and functional target validation experiments, e.g. conceptualize disease model systems using genetic manipulation techniques such as CRISPR, shRNA, RNAi, lentiviral/retroviral transduction, and phenotypic assays using microscopy, immunocytochemistry and high content imaging

  • Expertise in the ethical, logistic and legal human biospecimen sampling prerequisites is of advantage, so that biospecimen deliveries meet required research needs and timelines.
  • Be a member or lead cross-functional teams for target validation and preclinical projects
  • Consult to maintain a high level of productivity and execute trouble-shooting experiments in the lab


What you'll bring to the table

To make the most of this role and truly thrive, you should have:

  • Ph.D. in Biological Sciences, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or related discipline plus 10+ years of related post-doctoral or industrial working experience
  • Proven expertise with target assessments, preclinical projects up to candidate approval; expertise from clinical phases is beneficial
  • Proven experience with molecular biology, expression, functional and phenotypic experiments, including work with complex cell types (e.g. iPSC-derived cells) and primary tissues, including their sampling process
  • Extensive project work and stakeholder management experience; project leadership experience of advantage
  • Experience in target biology and validation planning for the indication pain is beneficial
  • Highly productive in performing laboratory research and method development
  • Proven track record in leading and working in teams based upon a matrix reporting is a must
  • Fluent business English language skills in speaking and writing, German language skills beneficial
  • Broad international & intercultural working experiences
